As an American citizen of Filipino descent I was really proud to read the history and exploits of the men of the Alamo Scouts. When I was a child growing up in the Philippines I have heard of Lt. Gen. Rafael Ileto and little did I know that as an Alamo Scout he and a lot of his fellow Alamo Scouts played significant roles in the liberation of the Philippines during the closing days of World War II. I am an avid student of history and it was an enlightening experience to read about this special unit.

CSM Kittleson was my first Team Sergeant in Special Forces. We served together in Vietnam. He was an outstanding role model to me. I was with him on one of his POW Rescue attempts. It was an honor to serve with him. RIP

I am looking to conduct telephone interviews with anyone who had contact with, supported, or conducted joint operations with the Alamo Scouts during WWII for an oral history to be published in late 2008 or early 2009. Of particular interest are Filipino guerrillas, Navy PT boat crewmen, Air Corps pilots, and non-Alamo Scout Army personnel. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. I have, for the last several years, stopped in every now and then to have lunch at a local drugstore lunch counter..., we still have one here. While lunching, I have come to know two extraordinary men, brothers in fact. Jim and Henry Baker. Jim went ashore at Calais 4 days after D Day, eventually was wounded and ultimately shipped back to the States. He has never completely recovered.., but became a successful and respected businessman. Henry is, of course, Henry 'Snake' Baker. I would never have known about the Alamo Scouts except for the fact that he one day wore his Alamo Scouts cap. That piqued my curiosty and I began to do some research. Like Jim, Henry returned and established himself as a respected local businessman. Unassuming, almost humble it seems to me. I feel it an inexpressable honor just to sit and share some coffee.

My brother was a alamo scout Irvin Ray. I was very young when he was in the service so I do not remember much about his life in the military. I am very proud of my brother and his family. I have read the book and watched the TV program and would like to know more about his time in the Alamo Scouts.

I am the oldest daughter of Zeke McConnell. I want to thank you Ann for the kind words about my Dad, and thank ALL the Scouts and their families for loving my Dad! You were/are like his second family only to our immediate family and grand children, as most of you know Dad was raised in an Indian Orphange in Oklahoma. I am THRILLED to say that my husband, Jack, and I are going to be able to join you this year at your Alamo Scout Reunion in Denver! I was taking care of Mom while Dad was at the last 3 reunions. Mom broke her left leg and she is slowly recovering at a Rehab Center. When I get back she will be moving to a very nice Assisted Living place here in Federal Way.

As a PFC in the UNC/EUSA public information office in Korea in 1963-64, Lt. Col Chester B. Vickery, onetime Alamo Scout
team leader, was a good mentor to me. I had contact with him for only a short time after my two years of active duty yet have always appreciated the counsel he gave me and his watching out for me. Altho we discussed only a bit his Alamo Scouts service, he did tell me how high a priority it was for him to not lose a member of his team. Thanks to the Alamo Scouts for your service.

I'm the nephew of General Rafael Ileto. His wife is my Grandmothers sister. I got goose bumps when I found out that he's an Alamo Scout and that the plaque is in Fredericksburg. I never knew he served with the Americans in the war. I told my family that from now on we will make a trip to Fredericksburg on veteran's day. I've lived in San Antonio for 17 years. My grandfather survived the Bataan Death March, his name. Vicente Dinglasan, but he was killed by the Japanese after being identified by one of the "stoole pigeons". He is survived by two son's. One is my father. I'm not sure if my grand dad was an alamo scout, although I was told growing up that he was an officer and was also involved with the guerrilas.

I am reading up on the ALamo Scouts as I just met the daughter of Col Sumner. As a Vietnam Vet, I am always amazed at the things that the Greatest Generation was able to do. Myself, along with another Viet Vet, a Marine, I was Navy, have formed the only known American Legion Motor Escort Team in the nation, and we have been performing the sad duty of escorting deceased soldiers coming home from Iraq. The beat goes on, generation to generation. We have a saying, 'let our generation of veteran never forget another'. Thank you all for your service to our country, as only those of us who have served, can speak with authority about doing so.

My heart sank today when I sat down at my computer hoping to send some form of correspondents to Galen Kittleson after reading about him in the book “Raider” only to hear of his passing. He him self was an extraordinary man and part of an amazing generation that fought for what they believed in no matter what the cost. His memory will live on forever as will the memory of the countless others who served this great country as he did.

What a great service Lance and Russ have done on this web site. My Uncle Andy Smith is an Alamo Scout, he has passed away, but once an Alamo Scout always a Scout. I served on PT boat 546 of Squadron 28. We worked with the Alamo scouts many times, taking them withing a few hundred yards of enemy held territory, putting them in a rubber life raft and leaving them to go ashore and scout for enemy gun emplacements, number of enemy on island, etc. I have never forgotten the bravery these men showed. We would go back later at night and pick them up. My hat goes off to these very brave soldiers who faced the enemy in a very different and hazardous way.

I am happy I had the chance to get to know Galen. He was a hero and also my role model. I looked up to him and still do to this day. When you met somebody like him and he tells you, "he is proud of you", it's a great honor. Just being able to know him was a honor. He meant a lot to me. He took me under his wing and has helped me accomplish so much. I miss him a great deal. He always used to help point me in the right direction. His advise was always helpful and admired. He was a great person and he was very special to me and many others. He touched people, who didn't even know him directly.

I served with CSM Kittleson in the 5th Special Forces, from 1971-1973. I can still see him with his beret in one hand and him rubbing his bald head with the other. Oh yea, he always had a smile on his face. He had the misfortune of standing in front of a our battalion or companies as it may be, and calling out names. "The following people are going to Disneyland" he would say. Of course we all knew he meant Vietnam. He was a born leader and lead by example. I was only 24 at the time and we all struggled to keep up with him on runs and marches. I was watching the History Channel one day and there he sat, modestly telling his story. I too didn't know he had accomplished so much in his career. He was a modest man, quiet, caring and helpful. A man I am proud to say I had known and served under. My father, Robert W. Teeples was a Alamo Scout. I was a LRRP with Kco. 75th Rangers in Viet Nam. He gave to me so much of what it took to perform those type of missions. The Alamo Scouts were the greatest.

I would like to express my condolences to the Kittleson family for the forsaken departure of their beloved Galen. I have just recently heard of the Command Sgt. Majors passing. I first read Raider one year ago after checking it out from my school library. I picked it up again this past April for another glance. I was truly inspired, and drawn to the storyline; partly because it was all true, and with the remaining factor being the unwavering sense of patriotism, honor, and duty which I felt radiated from the Sgt. Maj. A man of such virtue will undoubtedly be missed, and his memory cherished. I never knew, or met him, but a man such as this will always have my utmost respect; in this life and the next.

I remember Pappy Kittleson. He was my first team “daddy” and my mentor when I first came to the 6th Group in 1968 as a young buck sergeant medic fresh out of Training Group. I remember staring at the back of Pappy’s bull neck as he led our team on the morning PT run. I figured if Pappy could run I could run. I remember Pappy taught me how to tie a survival knot using parachute cord; this I have passed down to my son and other young troops. That knot is Pappy’s legacy to me. I saw Pappy on an interview on the History Channel in December 2005 as he recalled the Cabanatuan raid. I called him in January this year to say hello and talk of old times. When you meet a man like the Sergeant Major, regardless of his military accomplishments, you know you've met someone special. The CSM was dedicated to whatever he did whether it was the Military, his family, his faith, his hereford cattle or his Alamo Scout Explorer Group. He embodied the term "HERO" to a wide variety of folks, not just military folks. He will never know how many lives he touched and helped make better just by showing he cared, especially the troubled youngsters in the Alamo Scouts. I am proud to have met the man when I did and am happy that I have been able to help with the Alamo Scouts and carry on the tradition and the standards set by the CSM. We will carry on! My sympathies, again, to his family. He will be missed. He may have been small in stature but he was a giant at heart. Alamo All The Way!

I was an Alamo Scout in CSM Kittleson's civilian explorer troup in the '80's. I can't describe how good of a mentor he was... He taught us young punks all about respect, honor, responsibility, and common sense. He drilled those values into dozens, if not hundreds of people, and the world is better because of it. The world lost a warrior, a true hero, on May 4th. His passing makes me sad, but I know exactly where he is now. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Fair winds and following seas to a great American hero, Command Sgt. Major (Ret) Galen Kittleson. I first met Galen as a 16 year old working in a small garage in Osage, Iowa. The last time we met was in 1999 at a Memorial Day service in my hometown of Mitchell, Iowa. He looked impecable still in his dress uniform and was so gracious. I was in uniform and just wanted to shake his hand. When I was introducing myself he chuckled and said that he knew who I was. He asked me how many years I had in the Navy and I told him almost 29, his advice for me was to stay in as long as they would let me. I retired in 2001 with 31 years service. Galen was an awesome role model and will be missed.

We both grew up in Mitchell County, Iowa, lived in Toeterville, Iowa for several years, and had the privilege to live right next to Galen and Darlene Kittleson. What great neighbors they were, and what great memories we have, about so many days just living there! Amidst all the wonderful contributions made by Gay Kittleson to the United States, and they are beyond comparison, he was a great friend and mentor. He helped us as a young couple and our family to learn some never-to-be-forgotten values about this life that we all lead, and we remember many wonderful things about him and his family. As neighbors and friends, there is just way too much to mention here. God Bless Galen, Darlene, and family, and there is no doubt that Our Lord has lifted Galen to a new rank among the Saints. We shall always remember him in our hearts.

Stan was Galen's 2nd cousin and we were very fortunate to know Galen and Darlene. Darlene is a grand lady and at the funeral she received a round of applause for her role in Galen's service to his country. I knew Galen as a family man, a humble and humorous man who wanted all the Kittlesons, in Iowa and North Dakota,to know the family history and continue with family reunions. He helped me start planning the 2006 reunion to be held in North Dakota this summer. We will continue his work. We will miss him.

MSG Galen "Pappy" Kittleson was my team sgt in the 4th Mobile Guerrilla Force (VN-1967-68) when I was the team XO(A-403). I have never met a better soldier, mentor, teacher or man than "Pappy". He was patient with young Green Beret officers but was a stern yet gracious and humble and there is no one I respect more than him. On his passing from his last formation to the ranks of the heroes above I again salute him. There was never a finer soldier. Thank you "Pappy"

It is with great sadness that I read about the death of Galen Kittleson. Although I never met him personally I felt a certain closeness to him after having read so much about him and also after having had the privilage of working with the Alamo Scouts Team Dove during the last six months of the war. To borrow from the late Will Rogers, "I never met an Alamo Scout that I didn't like." The were a great bunch of guys and personified my personal image of the American soldier. Rest in peace "Pappy" and may your contibutions to this great country never be forgotten.

Though I never knew Mr. Kittleson I have read the articles in the local newspaper of his service to the U.S. and the Jr. Alamo Scouts program that he started for youth in the area in which he lived. There are very few men like him in a lifetime - - with his courage, determination and humbleness. His service to the U.S. was second to none and I was saddened to learn of his passing. Lt. Marion "Bud" Myers, was an alamo scout. I never knew him, as he died months before I was born. My mom, his daughter, knew of his being a scout but never explained the significance of what it meant to me. One day I was watching the history channel, and lo and behold they were doing a special on grandad's unit. Within two minutes of watching, my grandad's face appeared on screen. I recognized it from pictures my grandmother had in her house. I flipped out. No one in the family knew that he had been involved in something so extraordinary.

About 3 weeks ago, I was informed about the passing of Bill Rankin, a young U.S. Navy man whose photo (#126 in Alamo Scouts photo archive) "reverberated" around the world almost 60 years later. Almost 60 years later, the discovery of that photo, taken by Bill, of my family, including me when I was a little over 1-1/2 years old, being held on my mother's lap, on PT Boat 379 during our rescue from Fuga Island (See "Miracle Mission on Alamo Scout website), connected me with former PT boat members, including Bill Rankin, Ralph Kleeberger, and Handy Stinson, as well as Lance Zedric and Russ Blaise, and members of my extended family whom I had not had any contact with since 1965 when I left the Philippines to come to the U.S. I salute Bill, along with his fellow PT boat members, for his part in the mission that rescued my family off Fuga Island, and for being a member of "The Greatest Generation" ever.

As Historian for the Alamo Scouts Association, I am looking to obtain photographs (scans or photos)of the following in Kyoto, Japan: the Daiken Building (6th Army HQ); any barracks where the Alamo Scouts and 6th Ranger Bn were billeted from Oct-Dec 1945; any bars, clubs, restraurants, theaters, etc., where the Scouts might have frequented; and photos of "The Alamo Express," Krueger's special train. Andrew, I knew your uncle Tom Rounsaville well, and he was one of the most forthright, interesting, humorous, and charismatic Alamo Scouts I ever met. I would just like to say that I am proud to be one of Tom Rounsaville's relatives. As I watched The Great Raid it made me realize that he and most of the other men that liberated the Cabanatuan POW's were barely older than I am right now at the age of 21. Also, I am very proud to say that I will one day serve my country as I am currently a cadet in the Air Force ROTC program and I hope that I will make my Uncle Tom proud. Thank you to all the Scouts for everything you have done.

My greatest thanks to the Alamo Scouts and their participation in liberating my father, Sgt Albert L Parker, from Cabanatuan Camp. The fact that I am typing this letter today is testiment to their bravery and dedication. My father passed away in July, 2005. He carried with him the greatest admiration for the Scouts and Rangers who liberated him. He, as the other prisoners, had lost hope years before. They were excited to hear of the approaching Yanks, but knew that their days were almost over. I would be pleased to hear from any of the members of that unit or their families. It is a great thing that Hampton Sides's book and the subsequent film has brought this amazing feat back to the attention of the American public and the world.

My Good Friend Sid Tison was an Alamo Scout. I spent spent hours with this great American. As a young man, he took me flying which drove my interest in aviation. I retired November of 2004 from Delta Airlines after a number of years in the Airforce/Guard. I also spent some time with Martin Grimes. My grandpa was Willie B. Holeman TSgt, 383rd Co. K, 96th Infantry. He saw a great deal of action in the Phillipines and Okinawa. He would have been 83 today and he was always proud of his service and especially the men he served with. I never heard him mention the Alamo scouts by name, but he often spoke of the bravery of the men who liberated the POW camps in the Phillipines. I thank you all for your service and dedication to country and especially the families of those who did not make it home. Would welcome any information from anyone who served with my grandpa or in associated units.

My father was also a soldier but he was not a WWII veteran, he went to Korea (2nd BCT PEFTOK) and wento also to Vietnam (2nd PHILCAGV). He is also a Scout Ranger the Philippine version of the Alamo Scout . He enlisted in the Army in 1954 but he is retired now I think he had 29 years in service. My father is still living at the age of 72 and im proud of him, for his service to our country. It is always a great interest for me to read anything on Philippine War history, about our great countrymen who lost their lives for freedom.

I don't really no what to say, but I'm very impressed about all the work which has been put into this website. I'm starting to get elderly myself, 68 going for 69, and do remember a lot of things from my childhood here in Denmark. I did no much about what was going on in the Pacific until I grow up. I started to travel to the Philippines in 1998, and have by now been there 16 times. I have of course visited the big cemeteries in Manila, and that is where I really learned and started to understand what went on in the Pacific during WWII. I can only give you my best compliments for this website. I do wish you and all reader a very happy new year 2005.

Happy Holidays to everyone, and especially to the Alamo Scouts community. Let's make 2005 the best year yet for the Alamo Scouts website. At the Alamo Scouts reunion in June 2005, the Alamo Scouts will commemorate the 60th Anniversary of VJ Day and celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Alamo Scouts Association (ASA). We need more photographs for the website and for reunion displays, and urge the families of any and all Alamo Scouts to scour old photo albums for any and all memorbilia, not just photos, for inclusion in the ASA archives. Also, Russ Blaise and I welcome any war photographs of New Guinea and the Philippines that would enhance the site, regardless if they feature Scouts or not. I'm afraid I am a little late to discover this website. But I did find it very interesting. I've read the book the Raider about "Pappy" Kittleson. Which explained to me why I had such respect for the man. He was my A-team Sgt. '69-70 at Fort Bragg. Brag was something he never did. So it took some thirty odd years to find out why I have so much respect for the man. He deserved it and I damn well knew that, but he never spoke of what he had done. Though he sometimes wore an odd WWII patch as a combat patch. I went to see him this past summer and spent a day with him in Iowa. It was a day well spent, meeting his wife, and spending an enjoyable day on his family farm. He's still the man I remembered from so many years ago. He's still my hero.

This past Memorial Day, I had the privledge of meeting MG R.L. Shirkey. I remembered the occasion when the General (and all of the Alamo Scouts) had been awarded the Special Forces designation. I had been at Ft. Leavenworth that day. The Post CSM mentioned it to several of us that were attending some function. Unfortunately I could not get away to observe the ceremony. Several years later the General was the featured speaker at the Korean-Vietnam Memorial at the Wyandotte County Lake Park in Kansas City, Ks. The park was dedicated in 1988, since that time, the Legion of Honor, of Abdallah Shrine Temple has sponsored the Memorial Day Program. The Legion of Honor is the Veterans Organization of the Shrine of North America. It was my privliage and honor to serve as chairman for nine of the first sixteen years. My father had served in the CBI and had mentioned hearing about the Scouts, that was all I knew until hearing about Gen. Shirkey. When the original Memorial Day Program was planned and put together, one of the primary goals was to have Flag Officers as the principle speaker, not politicans... Our thoughts were based on the premis that the Officers that commanded and led troops (all services) had a deeper and stronger feeling of the sacrifices made by the men and women that have defended our country since its inception. The current situation in our country clearly illustrates the validity of that thought. I was not yet in school when you and your comrades were doing your duty, I was slightly younger when my father was in Bastone. Thank you and all of the Alamo Scouts for what you did for all of us. I am glad to have found out about the Alamo Scouts website recently. For to brief a period of time I knew Bill Nellist. When I moved from southern California up to Humboldt county in 1992 I joined one of the local shooting ranges. A year or so later I found that there was a small group that would show up on Monday mornings to do some long range shooting, and I decided to be a part of it. Bill was the mainstay of that group. For a while I knew nothing of Bill's past. I only knew that he was a very knowledgable shooter and he would always be there to give advice and guidance for folks such as myself that were trying to learn. Like most of the WWII veterans that I have known, including my father, Bill didn't talk about his experiences unless you asked him. During the time I knew Bill, many other people filled me in on his acomplishments with the Alamo Scouts. He eventually told me a few stories that I pried out of him. I know that he held General Krueger in high esteem for the work he did in forming and maintaining the Scouts, and also that Bill was always happy attending the Scout reunions. I am indebted to him for helping me in my quest to become a better rifle shooter, for making me his friend, and for letting me see how a true gentleman behaves towards others. There is one story I would like to tell about Bill. After one of the Monday morning shooting sessions we were all packing up our gear to go home, and Bill said, "Well, I'm going to go home and get my lovely young bride, and take her out for lunch". After 52 years of marriage, Bill loved Jane with the same passion as when they first married. Bill Nellist was a class act, and I would like to tell every Alamo Scout who ever served, you sir are a class act too. Thank you for serving your country, and may God bless you all. Sincerely,

Thank you Lance and Russ for writting the story of the rescue of my family from Fuga Island during WWII in the Philippines. I was so excited to find my picture in your Photo Archives - almost 60 years later! This discovery allowed me to meet (via e-mail) some great people like Lance Zedric, Russ Blaise and some of the crew members on PT Boat 379 (Bill Rankin, who took that picture, Ralph Kleeberger, Handy Stinson) which took the Alamo Scouts to that Island. Alamo Scout Lt. John Dove sounds like a man I would have loved to meet and I enjoyed reading about him in your book "Silent Warriors." Some of us have talked to Mrs. Dove and are grateful she provided letters from my grandpa to Gen. MacArthur and Lt. Dove thanking them for rescuing us. We are all grateful to them and the men on PT 379 for that day we'll all remember forever.

My dad and I were watching THC's show on the scouts and he mentioned his good friend Pete "Joe" Moon, was an Alamo Scout. I had grown up listening to Pete talking about fishing,hunting,and above all else,shooting. But I don't recall him even mentioning he was in the Army during WWII. I am an avid reader of first person accounts of WWII and would have really enjoyed hearing of his experiences first hand from him. Unfortunately he had passed away a few years before. I myself was surprised that I had never heard of the Alamo Scouts after all of the reading I have done about WWII. Silent Warriors and Ghost Soldiers are the only books I've read that give more than a mere mention of the Scouts. I've about gone through all the books I can find and am now pouring over the internet for sites like yours. All of the men and women who served in the war would do a great service to people like myself by telling of your personal experiences and rememberances on sites like these before they are lost forever. Thank YOU for all the things that you have all done for the world and all the things you have yet to share with it.

As Veteran's Day is approaching, we would like to send a remembrance of John M. Cook, who passed away on May 31, 2003. My stepfather was proud to be part of the many documentaries and, in particular, the book "Ghost Soldiers" written by Hampton Sides, and to share his experiences as a POW in Philippines during World War II. He was a true soldier all his life and is truly missed by his wife, Theresa Cook, and his entire family. I have always been interested in our armies action against the Japanese in the Philipines, e.i. 1940's. The treatment of American and Philipine prisioners of war was atrocious. MSG Galen "Pappy" Kittleson was my team sgt in the 4th Mobile Guerrilla Force (VN-1967-68) when I was the team XO. I have never met a better soldier, mentor, teacher or man than "Pappy". He was patient with young Green Beret officers but was a stern yet gracious and humble and there is no one I respect more than him. Thank you "Pappy"

I am so thankful for this tribute to the men who served as Alamo Scouts. My uncle was one of them Robert D. Hamlin. He would sometimes tell us stories and they were so interesting Why has there not been a movie about the men who gave so much. A side note when my uncle left the Army he went to work for Areo Jet and there he invented Solid Rocket fuel. He was one of five registered scientist without a college degree. Its sad to say that we lost him in 1997. Once again I am so proud of what they did for our country.

I recently saw the History channel on the Alamo Scouts and could not believe I had never seen the story of this legendary unit. I am from the 70's generation and I do not think there are many from my generation that really know and think about the price of our freedom and what it took to ensure we live in the land of the free. I shake the hand of every vet I see and say thank you for ensuring my freedom. The Alamo Scouts to me embody what is best to me about this generation of men who went to war, to ensure that I could grow up an have the privelige to say that "I am an American". I tell all I meet now when I can about the Alamo Scouts history.

I just watched a special on the Alamo Scouts and was surprised to just now see anything on the scouts. Excellent website! I just finished reading "Ghost Soldiers" (the Cabanatuan Prison Liberation). I had never heard of the Alamo Scouts and had to find out more. this is truly a story that needs to be heard. I pray America continues to have such men.

One of the first men I met when I came to Eureka in 1954 was Bill Nellist. He was a journeyman plumber at the firm my sister worked and he loved to hunt and flyfish. He had snow white hair and a barely discernable voice that I was told resulted for his military service. I heard two stiories...he had malaria and two it was because of the difficult missions he went on. I knew at that time he was on the mission to free the POWs in the Philippines. He and his wife Jane were friends of my sister and her husband. His son Chuck is a good friend of my son and they ride dirt bikes together. Bill passed away a couple of years ago and I am not sure of his wife. Bill would flyfish the Pacific ocean off the coast here in a float tube. He also waterskied from Eureka to Trinidad Ca on the ocean, a distance of about 15 miles in rough water.

Don Brown who was a member of the Ouzts Team was my Scoutmaster of Troop number 13 in Minneapolis, Mn. in the 1950's> He taught me many of life's lessons. Members of that scout troop are still friends and get together periodicaly for reunions. Don has passed away and is buried in Fort Snelling National cemetary in Inneapolis.

I am the son of Sgt. Paul E. Draper, 5th. training class, Ileto team. Growing up, I heard stories from my mom about the very elite group of soldiers my dad fought with in the Phillipines... and can always remember looking in the small metal box where dad kept his war memorabilia. It was a modest collection of unit badges, some silk aviation maps and of course his Scouts patch and a captured Japanese flag. The stories I heard likend the Scouts to the Green Berets and other well known Special Forces units. Yet I had never heard of the Alamo Scouts out side our home and recall chalking up those stories to exageration on my Moms part. I just finished "Silent Warriors". The pride I'm feeling can't be described with words; only experienced. To be able to read about at least a few of the actual missions my dad went on and see his name in print next to those men he fought beside... To learn of the training he endured and the skills he learned... and finally to be shown how the Sixth Army ( and many others ) systematically eradicated the Japanese from New Guinea and the Phillipines and basically drove their asses all the way back to Tokyo! (sorry...got carried away Thanks Lance. In a tangible way your efforts have changed me, at least in a small way, for the rest of my life. I am really interested in anyone who served with my dad to please contact me. I only knew him in his late 40's and 50's... It would be great to someone who knew him as a young man. When I was a young Special Forces soldier, I knew CSM Galen (Pappy) Kittleson, when he was the CSM of the 7th Special Forces Group. Although I had the greatest respect for him, I can now see that his very presents and mentorship in Special Forces was a result of his background and experience. Men like "Pappy" Kittleson helped to make Special Forces what it is today. "Thanks. Pappy"

My Mom's brother Harvey L. Hines (died Oct '99 of strange blood disease he fought since WWII), who I rarely ever saw growing up, talked with me in '91. Late into the nite he told me about a trek across one of the Islands, guided by a 15 year old Filipino Resistance Fighter to reconnoiter the Island for re-invasion. He said after the war his team was moved to a large Japanese city (Tokyo?) and given the task of guarding an innocuous butcher or bake shop. After several days of wondering what the heck they were doing there, they started nosing around. They found a trapdoor beneath a large butcher block or heavy table of some sort. When they entered, they found lots of gold bullion, which was trucked away some time later under orders from a civilian in a black trench coat (OSS?). I have never attempted any follow-up on my own, so anyone who knew him or who knew members of his team is certainly welcome to e-mail me with into. I don't know if my cousins (his 3 kids) are interested, but I sure am. Both my parents landed on Utah Beach (You're damn right my Mom wore Army boots!) and spent two winters patching up our guys. Today's kids don't have much of a clue what the Greatest Generation went thru, but it's high time they learn. Thank you. Great website!

I am a relative of Lawerance Coleman who served in the Alamo Scouts. His sister sent me the website URL and I have enjoyed learning about the Scouts. I had not heard of them. I was in the US Navy 1962 - 1966 and was involved in secret stuff, so I really enjoyed reading about the Scouts. There are so many veterans who have never gotten credit for the secret missions that they risked their lives on.

This was my first Alamo Scouts reunion. After working on the website for over a year and getting familiar with the names and photographs of the Scouts, now I got to meet them in person. What a payoff!, what a great group of men!, along with their family and friends. One thing I won't forget is that Zeke McConnell asked me if he could exchange name tags with me. I felt honored. I came away with knowing why my father, (William F. Blaise) made it home alive from the war. He had the best group of men that anybody could serve with and I thank them all for being there with him. I just wish my father was still with us to go to one of these reunions. Also after over a year of e-mailing and hours of phone conversations with Lance Zedric, I got to meet Lance and his wife Ching for the first time. I'm looking forward to the next reunion.

I am glad to see the Alamo Scouts finally getting recognition for their work. My father, Jacob T. Richards, served as a cryptographic technician with the 334 Signal Operation Battalion in the same battle areas: Hollandia, New Guinea; Leyte; and Luzon. He was sent in to Luzon to set up guerilla message centers before the landings, but I cannot find any information on his group. Any information would be appreciated. I enjoyed the Alamo Scouts website and found it informative.

I first heard of the scouts when I read the book GHOST SOLDIERS which recounts the liberation of prisoners on Cabantuan by rangers after detailed reconaisance by the scouts.A truly moving book of courage and teamwork.

My father was with the 43rd Division throughout the Luzon campaign. He was a platoon leader in the Quartermaster company and his primary job was as a convoy master (2 1/2 ton trucks.) One extra duty he had was to lead scouting missions in advance of moving his trucks to be sure they could handle whatever obstacles were present. He became an expert at that. In late July, 1945, my father received word that he had his rotation points and was to prepare to go home. However, the 43rd was chosen to participate in "Operation Olympic", the invasion of Kyushu, and he was called back. Because of his expertise at moving trucks, he was told he was needed to accompany a "scout" team that would travel to Kyushu via submarine, land by rubber boat, gather the necessary information about the landing beach, and then hopefully return to the submarine. At that point he told me he wrote his "last letters home." Just a couple of weeks later the bombs were dropped and the war ended. My father never had to go on the mission with the "Scouts." My father passed away in 1984, and it was not until the presentation on the History Channel did I know how famous those "Scouts" were. I wonder if anybody out there has any more details of how that mission would have been carried out. I know Pop started training, but I don't know whether he actually joined up with the Alamo Scouts or was still with the 43rd. He was at Camp Lacroix on Luzon when the war ended. I'd love to know. His name was Lt. Joseph H. Johnston.

My dad was a POW. I did not know this until last year my mother finally told me. He died in 1975 and I always wondered why he could not get over the war. He was 100% disabled vet. This week I found a hand drawn picture of him looking terrible dated May 1944. I was wondering in the Alamo Scouts helped get him out of a POW camp. He was in New Guinea during the war. I was told he was in a hospital all of 1945 after his release. His name was Harry Hall Saunders. If anyone could help I would appreciate it.

I regularly watch The History Channel and have always watched a lot of TV concerning WW2. I'm 53 and can't remember a time when I wasn't interested in WW2 history. I just watched a program on THC (8-1-01) on the Alamo Scouts. I hadn't known about them and thoroughly enjoyed the program. I am so excited and grateful that the story of the Alamo Scouts is finally being told by such a highly respected venue as The History Channel. We free Americans need to know much more about these extraordinary servicemen.

Tonight I watched The History Channel's wonderful documentory on the brave men who served with the US Army's Alamo Scouts during WWII. I love reading about and watching any programs on World War II. The special on the history channel caught my eye. When I was a child my mother cut out an article from our local paper about my great-uncle, Andy Smith. That article is still taped in my scrap book and is a cherished possession of mine. I was lucky enough to have had visted with Uncle Andy and have him tell me what he could about his experinces in WWII. The attention the Alamo Scouts are now getting is long overdue, but this web site is an wonderful effort to make sure they are never forgotten.

Have been studying special ops and intelligence organizations for many years. I had heard of Alamo Scouts, but not had much info until History Channel special aired. Look forward to reading Silent Warriors when I receive it. As with many such cases throughout history, we never really know the full measure of what we collectively owe to those who served in our silent services.

Well I caught your show on the history channel the other night and loved it!! My hat goes off to all the Alamo Scouts!! I have passed this page on to fellow friends to whom I think would appreciate it. I am a military veteran and had the oppurtunity to visit some of the 6th armies ol' hangouts in WWII. My grandfather was with the 6th army during WWII.

I would like to commend Lance Zedrick and Russ Blaise for putting up this site. As a student of history and as a Filipino, I'm grateful to the contribution the Alamo Scouts in the liberation of my country during the war. It's high time they receive the credit they deserve. Gen.
